Summer Darkness on 10-11 August 2007 (Utrecht, NL)
Over five years ago, Tivoli, EKKO, Cybercase and Mojo joined forces and the Summer Darkness underground festival kicked off, darkening the city centre of Utrecht for one hot summer weekend. And here we are in 2007, celebrating the 5th Summer Darkness edition, with the strongest boldest line-up thusfar of today's best acts in EBM, future pop, (dark)electro, metal, gothic rock and folk.
Ranging from massive headline bands to up-and-coming local Dutch talents and soon-to-be well known groups from across the globe, this year line-up presents the dark underground lifestyle in its full splendid glory along all side of the wide spectrum it encapsulates.
One town, different venues.
Each year, during four days, the Summer Darkness takes place in the Dutch town Utrecht.
And there's more to the Summer Darkness festival experience than never-ending live music in the three festival venues. A wide variety of special events such as church concerts, dance nights, lectures, performances, photo exhibitions and loads more have been assembled.
Since the first edition in 2003, over one hundred and fifty acts have played the Summer Darkness festival stages amongst which: Suicide Commando, Estampie, Orphanage, Faun, Dulce Liquido, Rosa Crux, Omnia, In Slaughter Natives, Diary of Dreams, Qntal, P.A.L., Therion, Bauhaus, VNV Nation, Moonspell, Combichrist, Clan of Xymox, Ataraxia, The Birthday Massacre, and many many more.
Earlier this year, Summer Darkness also had its first Winter Edition, soon to be followed by a second one, so stay tuned!
Friday, August 10th 2007
After a special church grand opening that we unfortunately missed, from the Centraal station, we went directly to the entrance of the Tivoli Oudegracht, to get our entrance tickets. It was the perfect occasion to wander in Utrecht's centrum, where we could definitely tell, by the sight of many black-dressed people, that today was not an ordinary day. We then walked to the EKKO, to attend the performances of three bands: A New Dawn, Lacrimas Profundere and Delain.
20:00 : A New Dawn
A New Dawn started as a one-man project in 1997. The band became a fact after completing a full line-up in 2003. A New Dawn combines different musical styles such as heavy metal, progressive metal and gothic, but also non-metal influences can be heard, just listen to a song as Ascension which not only contains a canon singing part, but also contains a bolero riff!
Besides the two clear lyrical voices, the female bass player grunts, and she does it easily, and powerfully!
The show was both impressive and interesting. This is clearly a band to check out and to follow.
A New Dawn introduced for the first time at the Summer Darkness festival their new bandmember: Jamila Ifzaren.
The response they got during and after the show showed them that they made the right choice.
21:00 : Lacrimas Profundere
Lacrimas Profundere is a gothic metal band from Germany.
The band was founded in 1993 by guitarist Oliver Schmid. At the time, the band was influenced by doom metal, and also made use of feminine vocals and classical elements.
With the entrance of vocalist Anja Hötzendorfer, they drew enough attention to themselves to be able to record their debut, entitled ...and the Wings Embraced Us, which was released in 1995 and was followed by La Naissance d’un Rêve, from 1997.
The concert was alright, but the singer was totally wasted. As a result, he spent the all show bending down and standing up, to put down or take his can of beer. And without knowing the lyrics of the songs, it was clearly impossible to understand a single word of what he was singing, but this might be the style of the band, or an attempt to sing with some beer in the mouth...
22:00 : Delain
It was our first concert of Delain in a small venue, so we were hoping for a good atmosphere.
Well, it was definitely better than usual, but Dutch people are still pretty calm… too calm actually. Sometimes you even wonder if they don’t miss the excitement of the event...
Besides, the lights of the venue were awful, not enjoyable at all, neither for the eye, nor for the camera.
13:45 : TheNAME
theNAME is a groovy rock/metal band with catchy songs. At heart theNAME is metal, but in the newer, more dynamic songs there is a clear pop influence. An own sound combined with musical elements from several different styles ensure a unique, total sound.
This concert was a very good surprise. The first important thing to say, is that theNAME sounds far better on stage than it does on CD, which is due, and you’ll read it in the interview we did of the band, to the way the mix was done.
The performance was energetic and heavy, the voice of Hadassa was strong, and the cover of Britney Spears was funny. So it was a very enjoyable moment.
TheNAME's Interview:
After their concert in the Tivoli, we did an interview of Silas (guitars/grunts) and Hadassa (vocals) from the Dutch band theNAME. We also took a few pictures of the all band, which means, in addition to the ones already named, Mike (bass) and Salvador (drums). We talked about the creation and evolution of the band, and also about their last album Recognition, released in July 2006.
"
Why ‘theNAME’ for ‘theNAME’?
Silas: I started only with a drummer, and we looked for a name that was kind of arrogant, you know like “this is THE thing, this is what you wanna see, what you wanna buy”. So it was like: ok, ‘theBAND’ sounds really stupid and it didn’t sound heavy anyway… so it became ‘theNAME’ !

15:00 : Krypteria
Kryteria is a German-Korean four piece, fronted by leadsinger Ji-In, a stunningly talented and breathtaking beauty Ji-In, who studied vocals and piano at the renowned Musikhochschule/Cologne, and her trio of band mates form one of Europe's hottest new live acts. Krypteria have a knack for dramatic punch-you-in-the-face songs with sizzling melodies all spiced up with mysterious atmospheres and classical elements such as their trademark Gregorian chants.
This concert was amazing. It’s refreshing to see a band so energetic. We were wondering what kind of performance the German four piece was going to deliver, and the result was really impressive. The singer Ji-In is very charismatic, so charismatic that she deserves to be called “the German Floor Jansen”! (top level in the scale that values the degree of charisma of female singers :p) The guys were also 100% in the show!
Krypteria's Interview:
After their first concert in the Netherlands, all the members of Krypteria answered some of our questions, and they did it extremely nicely. We talked about the evolution in the style of the band, from their musical project to their last album Bloodangels Cry, which is clearly heavier than all their previous releases. They also explained to us how they tackle the writing of new material.
"
Was it your first time in the Netherlands?
Cushi: Yes, it was our first time in the Netherlands. That’s something that we wanted to do for a long time, especially since we all were born or lived near the Dutch border. It’s funny that we didn’t make it before, but today we are finally here!

16:30 : Epica
The Tivoli is a really nice venue, because this all afternoon, the sound was perfect. Epica’s sound didn’t infringe the rule, which was enjoyable. All the elements were gathered for a good show.
Mark’s usual good mood was very pleasant. His grunts keep conveying a very powerful touch to the show. One thing keeps missing though: Simone’s concentration and/or involvement.
