Epica Concerts:
It had been a long time since our last concert of Epica, and, despite all of the critics that we expressed regarding Simone in the past; we were delighted to see her back on stage. This concert was unique since the band played their debut album The Phantom Agony. It was a great present for the fans, and the perfect way to welcome back Simone, who totally enjoyed herself on stage. And bravo for the special disco version of the song The Phantom Agony! Epica delivered a very good performance! Even if they weren’t the headliners that night, a huge part of the audience was there for them, and they made sure to make it clear! It was amazing to see the crowd so into the show. The fire effects added another dimension to the concert, and it’s really something which suits Epica well. Just before a big signing session, Mark Jansen answered extremely nicely our questions regarding Epica. We talked about their first US tour as headliners, their last album The Divine Conspiracy, an eventual second single, their experience with Nuclear Blast, and their CD presentation. The Tivoli is a really nice venue, because of this all afternoon, the sound was perfect. Epica’s sound didn’t infringe the rule, which was enjoyable. All the elements were gathered for a good show. Mark’s usual good mood was very pleasant. His grunts keep giving a very powerful touch to the show. One thing keeps missing though: Simone’s concentration and/or involvement. This concert was disappointing. First, Mark wasn't there, and even if his replacement, the singer of Oceans of Sadness, was pretty good, it wasn't the same. Then, the sound was awful; we could hear neither the samples, nor Simone's voice. Besides, the atmosphere was kind of weak, maybe because Simone wasn't focused… BUT! The last song of the setlist, Consign To Oblivion, was huge! It was the perfect way to conclude the show. It was our first Epica concert in Holland, and it was a massacre! Not that the band was bad this day, but the permanent technical problems certainly didn’t help them. Mark hardly made it on stage, and mainly tried to get some sound out of his guitar from backstage. The samples were barely audible, which even made it difficult to recognize some of the songs. The good side of all this is that the setlist was arranged and one song was added. This concert wasn’t off to a good start since until one hour before the opening of the gates, there were only a few people waiting outside. After the opening, the concert hall still seemed a bit empty. Anyway, the show was a very good one. The lights and the sound were surprisingly good, the band seemed happy to be there, and the audience was certainly delighted about that.
